      Behind the Canvas

Peonies are a favorite among Alaskan gardeners. Due to their later blooming time, and Alaska's short summers, they are becoming an important cash crop for Alaska growers.

This variety, Bowl of Beauty, is a particular favorite of mine, Several bushes were blooming when I visited my artist friend and master gardener, Karen Mattson. We sat down together and each painted a little painting en plen air (a French term meaning in open air" as we chatted and enjoyed a rare burst of sunlight, I tried to capture the vivid magenta pink of these giant fragrant blooms, as they gently swayed in the breeze.

This painting is sure to bring some old-fashioned country beauty to any home. It also makes a lovely all-occasion greeting card, and a thoughtful gift. Enjoy! ~ Tali
