I don’t remember her exact title at school, but this lovely woman worked in student services. There were several times during my time at OCAC that I felt like an outsider. This amazing human did a very good job validating my concerns and frustration, while reassuring me there was space for me within the community. As I painted her I remembered sitting at her desk crying my heart out. After painting twenty-four other people from my cohort and community, I learned most of us felt like outsiders in the beginning. It was silly to believe I was so different. I think that’s why one-on-one contact is so important.

She held beautifully still, like a poised dancer In the role of a swan, and I ached to portray her elegance, confidence, yet down-to-earth persona. It’s that kind of pressure that will make or break a painting. I still haven’t decided if the painting “made it” but I feel at least some of her caught in the paint. ~Tali
