One of the things that really impressed me about my painting professor was her ability and willingness to put her narratives aside and immerse herself in her students’ voices. It was not about her, it was about her students. She spent hours and hours with artists trying to suss out what they were trying to say. A good teacher is like that: they don’t try to “convert“ their students into painting like them, rather, they encourage the student to stretch in order to find more meaning in their practice.
Having said all that, it was a little nerve-wracking painting my painting professor. She is very good at “reading“ paintings. She sees a lot more than an ordinary person sees, or even an artist. What if she didn’t like my likeness of her? We ended up having a really nice time. It was not super intense or life altering, but we had already had those moments together. But I think it painting her portrait was affirming, for both of us. Her look of concern may be a reflection of my own, but then again, 2020 was clearly starting to get weird by then.
