As writing coach, this professor was almost an unofficial therapist. It’s not that she gave advice (except on writing), it’s that she helped us expand our writing through prompts that really dug into the core of our being. She really dug into the “why.” Sometimes the digging became painful, and I would pull away for a time declaring, “it’s good enough.“ But diving deep is kind of my thing and I always came back for more, the process was so insightful.

Boundaries really collapsed during our painting session. I was surprised at her image. With all the focus on writing and digging within, I never really saw or understood her face—the physical manifestation of her real being. The portrait looks a lot like her, but it doesn’t look like what I thought she looked like, if that makes any sense. I saw her very differently after this session together; I was trying to find the person I painted in the portrait. I remember being particularly tired after our my time painting her. Emotional connection can be exhausting for my particular brand of introvert. ~Tali
