Certainly one of the more unusual writing teachers I’ve ever had, this mild-mannered professor brought poetry to life. Not just in his class, but during my painting session with him. It wasn’t that we spoke about poetry during our session together, so much as the poetry his gaze inspired. His image came together quickly and easily, his expressive eyes giving a “come follow me” vibe. It just goes to show that you never know how easily a likeness will come.

By this time in my project, I knew I could get a good likeness, but I never knew when or how the gift would arrive, there was no predictable pattern. Some people were more of a struggle and I love their portraits because I fought so hard for the likeness. Others flowed as easily as a swift stream without any obstacle. I love those portraits because they remind me of the magic of the painting process.
