Some OCAC students were only in school for a little over a month when the college announced it was closing. The disruption to their lives was significant. While I believe all the faculty and most of the admins and board members acted in good faith, there was lack of transparency somewhere up the ladder. This also happened with Marylhurst University when they up and cancelled my cohort two weeks before classes began. I could have lost my scholarship because of the Marylhust’s lack of foresight. That’s how I ended up at OCAC in the first place. The change became a strange mixed blessing that enabled me be one of the last beneficiaries of a unique craft education, plus experience another art school, PNCA that came to our rescue. I get that the economy is bad and a lot of small liberal arts colleges are failing due to low enrollment. But the students who fall through the cracks are often the ones who pay the highest price. I just got so lucky in my college experience. I was able to squeak through all the hurdles, including the COVID-19 shutdown. But there were plenty who weren’t that fortunate, and I felt a responsibility to at least hear their stories and record their image.
