• 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀, 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱, 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 I start each painting on a high-quality stretched canvas, sometimes linen, sometime cotton, canvas glued on board, hardboard wood panels, or archival oil paper depending on the texture I want to achieve and convenience of the material for the painting location. The surface is carefully selected to ensure long-term durability and the best presentation of my work.
• 𝗚𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿: Before I begin painting, I apply a professional-grade gesso primer to the canvas. This step ensures that the surface is properly prepared, giving the oil paints the perfect texture and grip. Some of the professional grade canvases and boards I purchase are pre-primed.
• 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀: I use professional oil colors with rich pigments. Sometimes I even grind my own oil paints when I want heirloom earth pigments. I try to focus and favor quality brands manufactured locally. These include Gamblin Artist Colors and M Graham Artist colors. Both companies emphasize non-toxic formulations and environmentally friendly practices. Artist pigments are notorious for their toxic chemicals and heavy metals. I’m committed to using non-toxic pigments whenever possible to create art that is beautiful, safe, ethically sources, and environmentally friendly.
• 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗯𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: I use a variety of natural and synthetic bristle brushes, selecting the size and shape based on the detail or effect I need—whether it’s a broad stroke with a flat brush or delicate details with a round brush. I choose brushes from reputable brands like Da Vinci, Rosemary & Co., Winsor & Newton, Princeton Artist Brush Co., and Escoda. These companies are known for their commitment to ethical sourcing and high-quality craftsmanship, ensuring that the natural hair brushes I use are responsibly obtained and that animals are not harmed solely for the purpose of making brushes. This preference allows me to work with quality, often handmade oil paint brushes while remaining mindful of animal welfare and the environment.
• 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: On my wood palette, I carefully mix colors to create the perfect hues and gradients for each piece. The palette is my workspace for experimenting with color combinations while minimizing paint waste.
• 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗞𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲: I often use a stainless steel palette knife to mix paints and apply thick, textured layers. The knife allows me to create bold, expressive strokes and impasto paintings with liveliness and dimension.
• 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀: I mix spike oil into my paints to modify their consistency and enhance their flow. This natural solvent made from lavender is a more environmentally friendly alternative to mineral spirits and turpentine, helping me achieve the desired transparency and smoothness in my layers while
• 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘀: While I use spike oil in my paintings, I sometime use on odorless mineral spirits to remove excess pigment from my brushes. This ensures my brushes stay in top condition without affecting the painting process.
• 𝗖𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀: I keep lint-free rags and disposable paper towels handy to wipe brushes and clean up oil colors. I do my best to minimize waste by reusing materials whenever possible.
• 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘅: My easels are the backbone of my painting process. I rely on a sturdy, adjustable wooden easels to hold the canvas and boards at the perfect angle. When painting en plein air, I rely on a compact and versatile pochade box. This portable easel allows me to easily transport my painting supplies and set up quickly in any outdoor location. The pochade box includes compartments for my paints, brushes, and a small palette, making it ideal for capturing the fleeting beauty of nature on-site. Whether I’m working in the studio or out in the open, my pochade box helps me stay organized and focused on translating the scene before me onto canvas.
• 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: Once the painting is complete and fully dry, I apply a final varnish to protect the surface and enhance the colors. I opt for varnishes that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are completely removable to reduce environmental impact, and ensure your paintings can be easily cleaned for generations.
• 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Before applying paint, I often sketch the basic composition with charcoal sticks or graphite pencils. This initial sketch helps me plan the layout and proportions of the scene. If I chose to transfer a photo, I will use transfer paper or pastel that is compatible with the oil layers.
• 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺𝘀: I incorporate mediums like walnut oil or damar varnish into my process to adjust drying times and achieve different textures and finishes. I choose non-toxic mediums whenever possible to create art that is safe for both my family and the environment.
• 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘀: When creating my art, I strive to paint from life whenever possible, immersing myself in the natural scene to capture its true essence. The presence of being on-site allows me to fully engage with the environment, experiencing its colors, light, and atmosphere firsthand. However, due to work and family responsibilities, painting en plein air isn’t always feasible. To ensure authenticity and respect for copyright, I primarily use reference photos that I personally take. These photos are carefully chosen to reflect my genuine experiences and observations, capturing the essence of the scene as I perceive it. This approach allows me to translate the beauty and details onto canvas. This avoids copyright infringement—a topic that is particularly important to me. However, by using only my own photos from my own experiences I am able convey not just the visual beauty but also the emotional and experiential presence of the moment, creating a truly authentic original work.
