Sometimes a painting spot is too good to pass up, even if it is on someone else's property. Such was this grassy edge of Swan Island Dahlia farm in Canby, Oregon. Shaded by some large oaks it provided the perfect view of this colorful panorama.
My friend and I knocked on the door of the adjacent house to get permission to paint on their ground, but no one answered. It was just on the edge, between the farm land (which kindly granted us permission to paint) and the private property. What is an artist to do?
We chose to paint. And quickly. The vibrant blooms shining in the sun seemed surreal, yet there they were before us. Such a perfect hour to delight our artist senses.
Right as we were moving our gear back to the car, the owners arrived. My friend and I smiled and waved, relieved at our quick getaway.
This original plein air oil painting is perfect for any spot that could use some lively color and light. You won't find a painting like it, since the view is not on public property ;) ~Tali
Swan Island
Swan Island Dahlias, has been in business for over 88 years. They are the largest and leading dahlia grower in the United States. They are located in the town of Canby, in the rich soil of the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The farm was originally located in Portland, Oregon, with some buildings on Swan Island, which is where the farm's name was derived from.
Swan Island Dahlias hybridizes new varieties of dahlia flowers, planting over 10,000 seedlings each year. From those original seedlings, it takes about 4 to 5 years to offer a new seedling for sale. Each season they introduce from 5 to 15 new varieties increasing their selection all the time. They grow over 360 varieties on 40 acres that are open to the public during blooming season, and host the largest dahlia festival in the United States featuring over 400 dahlia arrangements during the festival.
