Image Description

"Fresh" is an original still life painting of roses tucked in a teacup. It was painted "en plein air" in oil paint by Oregon impressionist Talya Johnson.

Behind the Canvas

A simply, miniature oil painting, a still life of roses tucked in a teacup. It was painted outdoors from life.

During that summer the Painted Ladies (a local group of women artists that I helped organize years ago) were hosting a weekly Friday paint out in the Palmer Museum garden grounds, one of Alaska's beloved attractions.

I feel the Heavens looked down fondly on us that important summer as we spent the long rewarding day setting up our tent, selling our works, featuring local artists, and mentoring the community is its exposure to Plein air painting (painting from life, in open air). We encountered many difficulties that season, both individually and as a group. Yet every Friday, as young and old gathered in the gardens with their paints, pencils and crayons, the sun would miraculously burst upon us. Those blessed enough to have endured Alaskan summers will understand the significance of having the sun come out even once, let alone every Friday. These days became the highlights of my week.

May this impressionist, light-filled oil painting also bring sunshine into your life and home. It enlarges beautifully giving you a deeper appreciation for the textured brush work hidden within the image. ~Tali
