Most Anchorage and Valley residents in Alaska know about the glory of the Eklutna Flats in full bloom with the violets and blues of wild irises. But few are aware that shortly before the iris show, this scenic landscape is blanketed with large swathes of en mass tiny wild shooting stars. I visit these fields with my artist friends and fellow Painted Ladies judiciously in early summer hoping to catch these Native Land fields bathed in rare direct light.
On the day depicted in this painting, we got lucky. With our children happy and playing in the open fields, I attempted to capture our majestic Pioneer Peak, peeking through the light clouds and between the abundant foliage, blanketed warmly by the happy pink and magenta shooting stars and dandelions.
I often feel like a pioneer myself, during these lovely moments painting out in the open air, often in isolated locations. This painting is sure to bring out the courage and pioneer spirit in all who enjoy its view.
